A Brief History

July 20, 1889 --- Albemarle Baptist Church organized. J. M. Bennett, pastor.

1891 --- John C. Denny becomes pastor.

May 19, 1891 --- Lot conveyed to church for a church building.

1892 --- G.O. Wilhort becomes pastor. Church building is erected on southwest corner of North and Third Streets. WMU is organized.

1895 --- John W. Suttle becomes pastor. Land purchased for a parsonage.

1898 --- J.A. McKaugham becomes pastor. Church membership reaches 299. Church becomes self supporting.

1901 --- Ralpf H. Herring becomes pastor. Congregation assists in establishing West Albemarle Baptist Church.

1904 --- J.M. Barnette becomes pastor, Membership declines from 258 to 186.

1906 --- B.W.H. Sims becomes pastor. All church records inadvertently destroyed.

1909 --- Albert H. Wyncoup becomes pastor. Committee appointed to seek property for a new church building.

1912 --- Alexander Miller becomes pastor. WMU reorganized. Church votes to purchase a lot for a new church building.

1915 --- Robert P. Walker becomes pastor. Construction of new building begins.

1918 --- Q.C. Davis becomes pastor. Church Building is completed and occupied.

1925 --- Fred A. Bowers becomes pastor.

1931 --- 86 baptisms performed, the church record for a single year. Average Sunday School attendance reaches 440.

1937 --- W. J. Bradly becomes pastor. Plans for new education building must be postponed because of WWII.

1950 --- J. Boyce Brooks becomes pastor. Whitworth property purchased. Sanctuary renovated and enlarged. Education building completed. Assistant to pastor employed. Minister of Music employed. Financial program nearly tripled.

1956 --- Sunday School enrollment reaches 864 and average S.S. attendance reaches 478.

1958 --- Dr. T.L. Cashwell becomes pastor. Church indebtedness fully paid. Lottie Moon offering reaches $9000. Sunday School attendance grows to 930. Church music program surges under leadership of Evans Grimillion.

1964 --- Dr. Elroy Lamb becomes pastor. Community youth breakfast is established. Biddix property purchased. Ed Whitley Bible Class begins Morrow Mountain Ministry.

1974 --- Harold McDonald becomes pastor. Deacon Family Ministry established. Sanctuary renovated.

1976 --- Crotts property purchased.

1983 --- J. H. Hill property purchased.

1985 --- Fellowship Hall completed; dedicated October 13th.

1988 --- Church Centenial Celebration. Lottie Moon offering totaled $21,600.

1993 --- January Groundbreaking for new wing of church building and renovation of Education Building.

Dec. 19, 1993 --- Celebration Day. Sunday School attendance reaches 576.

Nov. 27, 1994 –- Introduced the Hanging of the Green Service.

April 15, 1995 --- Introduced the Maundy Thursday Service.

June 24, 2001 --- Harold McDonald retires.  The church shows it's appreciation for his service.

May 11, 2003 - Rev. Roger Thomas accepts the call to First Baptist.
